Jonathan Bi
Following Odysseus in Ithaca
What can an ancient Greek epic teach us about living well today?
Human Focus Films travelled to Ithaca, Greece, to document philosopher Jonathan Bi as he retraced the legendary journey of Odysseus, exploring Homer’s Odyssey through the landscapes where the story is believed to have unfolded. The project formed part of Jonathan’s ongoing mission to make philosophy and the Great Books accessible to a modern audience through cinematic storytelling.
Filming across iconic locations including the Palace of Odysseus, the School of Homer and the Cave of the Nymphs, we combined sweeping aerial cinematography, immersive documentary visuals, walking pieces to camera and long-form philosophical lectures. Rather than simply illustrating the text, the films invite viewers to experience timeless questions about homecoming (nostos), virtue, leadership and the search for a meaningful life through the places that inspired one of history’s greatest works of literature.
Producing the series required a lightweight and agile documentary approach, allowing us to move quickly between remote archaeological sites while maintaining a cinematic visual style. Every aspect of the production, from location planning and drone cinematography to rapid media management and content delivery, was designed to support a fast-paced editorial workflow for multiple YouTube episodes and short-form social media content.
At Human Focus Films, we believe that documentary filmmaking has the power to make complex ideas feel deeply human. Whether telling the story of a charity, an organisation or a philosopher exploring the foundations of Western thought, our goal is always the same: to create visually compelling films that help audiences connect emotionally with ideas that matter.
